You can buy the cheap speaker versions for about $20. But let me just say, that the $50 Dohm is worth every fucking Penny. We have two of them. The sound is actually created by a fan and it's so. much. better.
Emphatic endorsement: 'worth every fucking penny'. Owns two. Specific: fan-created sound is dramatically better than speaker-based $20 alternatives. Justifies $50 price.
I don't like the hatch either! I was so disappointed because it is like the #1 recommended baby item. Aside from disliking the sounds, I keep managing to accidentally turn on super bright blue lights when I want to turn it off. It's not intuitive. I use the dohm and love it. I think it gets pretty loud so I never have it at full volume (am also a worrier about hearing loss). I work in mental health and also use it outside my door for therapy sessions. It's the best sound machine out there in m...
Best sound machine in their opinion. Specific: gets loud enough without full volume, also used professionally outside therapy office door. Hearing-safe at mid volume. Switched from Hatch.
My Hatch kept cutting out and they replaced it for free. The new one has been fine. If I had to pick a different one I'd just get a Dohm which is what we use in our room. No electronic white noise is as good as the fan. But currently on the hatch we're using ocean noises, not white noise.
Uses Dohm in own bedroom. Specific opinion: 'No electronic white noise is as good as the fan.' Would choose Dohm over any other alternative if replacing current setup.
We use a Dohm marpac. Simple, not interesting enough to be seen as a toy/played with instead of sleeping, and has run every night in our son's room for the past three years.
Three years of nightly use. Specific positives: simple design, not toy-like so toddler ignores it, reliable continuous operation.
This plugs into the wall and has an on off switch very simple and honestly VERY soothing [DOHM sound machine](https://www.target.com/p/yogasleep-dohm-classic-white-noise-sound-machine-white/-/A-79797487?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df_free_online&CPNG=storefront&adgroup=37-8)
Owns it, emphasizes simplicity: plug-in with on/off switch. Describes sound as 'VERY soothing'. Links to specific product at Target.
I personally like the Yogasleep Dohm for Baby. It's a fan in there that makes the sound instead of an electronic white noise. I don't have any science to support this but I liked that it was a fan and not a "sound". For that reason I don't like my SIL's hatch. It sounds too artificial to me. But there are pros to something like that too bc it can be a light and play different sounds, etc if that's something that's important to you.
Prefers Dohm's mechanical fan sound over Hatch's electronic noise which sounds 'too artificial'. Specific distinction: real fan inside vs recorded/generated sounds. High community agreement (9 upvotes).
Plug in "dohm" it's forever on in our bedroom lol it's the kind they have at the hospital
Runs continuously ('forever on'). Specific: plug-in design means never turns off, same type used in hospitals. Reliable always-on operation.
You can change the volume and the quietest setting is very low. I downloaded a decibel app and found the midpoint setting to be about 50 decibels so that's where we keep it.
Measured decibel level: midpoint setting is ~50dB. Specific volume range detail — quietest setting very low, adjustable. Data-driven approach to hearing safety.
I hate all of the sounds on the hatch too! So I got the yoga sleep dohm which is slightly cheaper than the OG dohm. Works great on lowest setting.
Switched from Hatch to Yogasleep Dohm. Works great even on lowest setting. Notes it's slightly cheaper than the original Marpac Dohm.
We have the hatch too and the sounds are awful. I cannot understand why it's so popular. We also have the dohm, but I ended up using it for me because it is not loud enough for the baby's room in my opinion. We landed on the lectrofan for the baby's room. Dohm has the best sound, but I just don't think it's loud enough to block out the sounds of the house.
Mixed: 'best sound' quality of any machine but not loud enough to mask household noise for baby's room. Ended up using it for themselves instead. Chose LectroFan for baby.
We started with a Dohm but thought it was super quiet. I didn't think it would work well for a baby across a room.
Specific negative: too quiet for use across a room from baby. Started with it but found volume insufficient for their setup.
LectroFan High Fidelity White Noise Machine with 20 Unique Non-Looping Fan and White Noise Sounds and Sleep Timer. Plugs in and doesn't stop. We had the dohm but it started squeaking after a year or so.
Owned Dohm but it developed a squeak after about a year of use. Switched to LectroFan. Specific mechanical failure over time.
